To qualify for the CWEng certification, applicants must meet one of the following education and experience combinations:

  • Bachelor of Science or higher in engineering: Minimum of one year of welding-based work experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering technology: Minimum of two years of welding-based work experience.
  • Other related Bachelor of Science degrees: Minimum of five years of welding-based work experience.
  • Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree: Minimum of 10 years of welding-based work experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent: Minimum of 15 years of welding-based work experience.

Relevant experience can be in areas such as design, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, research and development, and training. Additionally, individuals with a State Professional Engineering License in Welding Engineering or a diploma from the International Institute of Welding (IIW) or European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF) programs may receive special considerations in the qualification process.

CWEng Renewal

  • Overview

The CWEng certification is valid for an indefinite period as long as it is renewed every five (5) years.

To renew, CWEng professionals must demonstrate successful completion of continued education every five years, totaling 80 contact hours or a combination of contact hours and continuing education units related to the functions defined in AWS B5.16.

Renewal applications can be accessed through the Certification Application Portal, and the status of credentials, applications, or exam registrations can be checked via the MyAWS Portal.
