The American Welding Society offers an intensive CWI 9-Year Recertification seminar. This seminar was created to offer CWIs an opportunity to earn their required 80 hours for recertification in a highly collaborative environment.
This course not only satisfies the eighty hours of continuing education as an alternative to retesting, but serves as an opportunity for established CWIs to network and discuss topics meaningful to their day-to-day work. This interactive format allows CWIs to share and learn from their peers, who collectively have many years of experience.
The objective of this seminar is to provide a collaborative means for CWIs to satisfy their 80-hour reaccreditation requirement.
Physical copies of all the books/publications used during the seminar are listed below. Some will be provided to you in advance and others will be made available at your seminar site. This allows you to review the content that will be covered during the seminar ahead of time and complete the needed pre-work. A tool kit with various instruments for visual inspection will also be shipped to you.
Keep in mind that it is your responsibility to bring these materials with you to the seminar. Spare copies will not be available on-site, so please make sure you don’t leave your seminar materials at home!
This seminar is conducted over six days, from Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Attendees will also receive a communication regarding prework to be completed and brought to the 9-Year seminar.
The seminar begins with an informal skills assessment to identify the fundamental areas the instructor will cover during the course.
Bring with you, and be prepared to discuss, one or more real-world problems encountered on the job (non-proprietary). Problems can be technical or administrative and will be presented and discussed with other experienced CWIs. This interaction often results in innovative problem-solving techniques and solutions. Bring along any codes or other documents necessary for clarification.
Compact eighty-hour course design combines pre-seminar assignments with daytime and evening onsite sessions, directed studies, and other activities.
Attendees receive their AWS Certificate of Completion on the final day of the course. Rare opportunity to meet and share experiences with other seasoned CWI professionals from a wide range of industries.

AWS offers the CWI 9-Year Recertification as a six-day in-person seminar that allows Certified Welding Inspectors to renew their credential by earning 80 professional development hours instead of retesting.
This seminar is intended for Certified Welding Inspectors (CWIs) and Senior Certified Welding Inspectors (SCWIs) who are approaching their 9-year recertification deadline and want to maintain their certification through continuing education.
The seminar covers updates to welding codes and standards, visual inspection practices, welding metallurgy, nondestructive examination methods, weld discontinuities, and inspection documentation, with emphasis on current industry requirements and applications.
The course is conducted over six days, typically running Sunday through Thursday full days, with a half-day session on Friday.
Participants receive course materials and reference publications used throughout the seminar. AWS may also assign pre-seminar work to be completed in advance to ensure participants are prepared for in-class discussions and activities.
Successful completion of the seminar provides the 80 professional development hours (PDHs) required by AWS for CWI or SCWI 9-year recertification, eliminating the need to take a recertification exam.
Completing the seminar allows eligible participants to maintain their AWS CWI or SCWI certification, demonstrating continued competency, up-to-date knowledge of welding inspection practices, and ongoing professional development.
