The U.S. Navy’s latest aircraft carrier boasts tons of steel, various welding processes, and an Olympic connection

On August 27, 2022, Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky gave the command to Big Blue crane operator Charlie Holloway to lower the Enterprise (CVN 80) ceremonial keel unit into dry dock number 12 at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), Newport News, Va., a division of HII — Fig. 1.
